Must-Have Items For ANY Flight

Taking a plane is not like taking a bus or a car. The change in altitude affects us in different ways, so it’s a good thing to be prepared. The best thing you can do to prepare for a flight is to take one and listen to your body and understand what happens to it while you’re on the flight and then after. As a seasoned traveler, I never get on an airplane without my trusty little travel kit. I’m happy to share my items with you all, but it’s important that you tailor your travel kit to fit your needs!

What do I bring on EVERY flight?

Water:
Everyone take note: Airplanes dehydrate you! I personally get so dehydration my face gets puffy and I usually end up with a breakout a day or two after my flight. To stop this from happening I purchase two one-liter water bottles at the airport (depending on the length of the flight) and I drink and drink and drink throughout the flight. Even if I’m having a cocktail on board, I make sure I drink a lot of water.

Moisturizer:
You know all those Sephora samples you get with your order? I keep them for traveling and bring a few with me on the flight. Usually, when I fly I skip make-up because I know I’ll need to freshen up after the flight. Since the air in the airplane is recycled, it dries up my skin. To prevent break-outs I moisturize! If it’s an overnight flight, I put some on before I try to sleep and then again when I get off the plane. It really makes a difference in how I look when I get off the plane.

Toothpaste and Toothbrush:
Save some of your bottled water and use it to brush your teeth in the washroom during an overnight flight. I usually keep up with my regular skincare routine on overnight flights (I try to wait until most have used the washroom so I don’t hold people up). If the flight is a few hours, I just duck into the washroom in the airport after I land. You feel so much better after you brush your teeth and you can easily find a travel sized toothbrush that fits perfectly in your handbag.

Hydrating Face Gel:
This is something I added to my travel bag a few months ago when I went to Seattle. It worked so well for me that I used it on my flight to New Zealand as well. The cooling feeling and the hydration it gives your skin is perfect for people like me who experience dry and puffy skin.

Eye Mask and Ear Plugs:
If you are on a long-haul flight and it’s an overnight flight, you need both of these items. While the earplugs may not completely block out the noise it definitely helps a lot. It muffles the engine noise and chatty passengers. The eye mask blocks light that comes from overhead lights or lights from the washroom etc. These are a lifesaver if you plan on sleeping on any flight!

Minimal Make-Up:
As I mentioned, I don’t wear makeup on the flight, but after I wake up from sleeping, I continue my regular morning routine and head to the washroom to freshen up and use a little makeup to help me look a bit more lively. It’s up to you and what you feel is necessary, but I usually go for eyebrow filler, mascara, and a little bronzer. It makes a huge difference in how I feel getting off the plane.

Wipes (bathroom and face):
Make-up wipes (whether you’re wearing makeup or not) will help your face feel fresh and clean (because you can’t shower on a long-haul flight) and bathroom wipes will have the same effect. Sorry for the TMI, but you will thank me for this tip if you don’t already bring them.

A long cardigan:
Planes get cold! Even with the small blankets some airlines provide, having that extra layer is nice to have. I always pack a cardigan on all flight regardless of the duration.

A colouring book:
Okay, this one may be surprising to you, but I have anxiety and one of my triggers is….flying. Yes, the girl who can’t live without travel is terrified of being in planes. Colouring books keep me from panicking because it requires a lot of focus and it’s therapeutic. I think it’s also a great activity to do when you’re super bored.

Vitamins and cold prevention medication:
Raise your hand if you get sick a few days after flying! You will need to discuss what’s best for you with your doctor, but I start a cocktail of vitamins daily a few weeks before I fly and I also start taking cold prevention medicine. There is nothing worse than coming home from vacation and getting sick.
